I got a hand written letter in the mail from my granny (my mom’s mom) today. Nothing in the world beats that. I last visited my granny in May. She said then, like she does every year, that her garden won’t be worth a thing because it’s too dry. Nothing’s coming up, she says. And then I get an update like this:
“I had squash to put in the freezer, plenty to eat and I shared with the neighbors and put up for Barbara Ann and Martha. I put up two batches of Bread and Butter pickles and had plenty to eat and share […] I also canned 11 pints of green beans and several pints of butter beans.”
When she says plenty to eat that means plenty for her five children (and spouses), 11 grandchildren (and spouses), 17 great grandchildren, and 1 great great grandchild to eat.. because she definitely cooks meals for our entire family sometimes.
In other Turkey Town news, my dad says that our dog almost drowned yesterday. She’s old. Really old. We think she may even be blind and deaf at this point. The dog paid my grandma (dad’s mom) a visit yesterday afternoon just when Grandma was feeding her fish. Somehow the dog fell off the dock and into the water. A few years ago this would not have been a problem. But, like I said, the dog is ancient and has no sense of direction. My grandma (88 years old) noticed the dog in the pond and quickly drove over to my dad’s house to fetch him for the rescue. Amazingly, the dog stayed afloat long enough for my dad to wade out and reach her. We’re all very relieved.
