1 of 43,000 blighted homes in New Orleans
It's time.
The doc said I pulled a muscle coughing.
Could there be a clearer indicator of my physical state? I need to get to the gym STAT.
These American Lives
These are good. Really good.

New Orleans Real Estate
The city of New Orleans just rolled out its soft second mortgage program for first time homebuyers. They’re giving over $50 million in subsidies (up to $65,000 per house) in an attempt to speed up the redevelopment of some of the city’s most neglected neighborhoods.
That’s a pretty incredible deal.
Here’s the house I would buy:

Self-Portrait
Self-portraits are obnoxious. I wish I were capable enough to stage a shot and have the camera timer flash away. That way people might wonder who took the photo. There’s no doubt who is responsible for this one.
Just me, smiling at a piece of technology.
No chingues con nosotros.
Lots of questions here. I’m a fan of the gun riding high.
Why did the chicken cross the road?
My neighbors lost their chicken.
Homemade Pecan Pie
In my granny’s kitchen there’s a little plaque on the wall that reads: Never trust a skinny cook. I finally understood that this week - I mean, REALLY understood it - after firing up the oven in an attempt to make homemade pecan pies. I had a hard time pouring that goopy cup of Karo syrup into the mix but it was well worth it in the end.
Below is Mama’s recipe for Pecan Pie...

An Intimacy that was Unearned
I haven’t posted a new blog lately because I’m uncomfortable blasting my thoughts of frustration to the general public. Nobody wants to hear that depressing shit, anyway. Except.. maybe they do?
I read a Modern Love essay today about a woman Googling her ex and finding a gold mine of information via his personal blog. She hadn’t seen the guy in 20 years yet in a matter of a few...

Turkey Town Update
I got a hand written letter in the mail from my granny (my mom’s mom) today. Nothing in the world beats that. I last visited my granny in May. She said then, like she does every year, that her garden won’t be worth a thing because it’s too dry. Nothing’s coming up, she says. And then I get an update like this:
“I had squash to put in the freezer, plenty to eat and I...
Vacation from Unemployment
I’m back in New Orleans after spending a long weekend in Spotsylvania, Virginia with my brother and sister. I went to check out Kelley’s new home (new to me.. she moved in with her boyfriend, Tom, almost two years ago), situated on a 4,500+ acre farm in the middle of an old civil war battlefield about an hour or two outside of Washington, DC. Justin happened to be in town, so we had a...
Richest and Strangest Waste of Time →
There are so many things terrible (and terribly interesting) in this piece that I don’t know quite where to begin. The author talks a lot about the work environment at Bridgewater Associates - the “richest and strangest hedge fund” in America. Some refer to it as a cult. Others - namely Dalio, the CEO - see it as brilliantly simple and efficient.
I read this stuff and...
"We really needed it."
To appease the granny within me today I’m going to talk about the weather. It has rained in New Orleans for at least the last seven consecutive days. Very typical summer weather: sun in the morning, rain in the afternoon. The latest rain showers (previous 24+ hours) deserve more attention. It has rained so much that our sun room has turned into the wet room. The rain is pouring down the...

White Whine of the Day
Just when I start to feel I could survive with my measly savings a random $300 doctor bill comes in the mail. And then I have to pay for a new car tag. And cell phone bill. And utilities.

Modern Love - Doomed? →
Here’s a great New Yorker piece on the ins and outs of online dating. The author brings up an interesting point about modern love:
“If your herd is larger, your top choice is likely to be better, in theory, anyway. This can cause problems. When there is something better out there, you can’t help trying to find it. You fall prey to the tyranny of choice—the idea that people, when faced...
